braidio

Braidio was a radio show where I braided hair live on air. Through the intimacy of touch, Braidio got people to unwind, slow down and reconnect with their heads.  Artists, musicians, scientists, bartenders and even babies have experienced this new radio territory. The idea was to bring a little of that human touch to the airwaves. Conversations started with hair but would go anywhere...

Born in a rickety greenhouse turned pirate radio station on the edge of the Bay of Fundy, Braidio has been reconnecting people to their heads since 2012. Originally airing bi-weekly on CKDU 88.1fm, I braided all the good hairy people of the coast for over three magical years.

This is what the CKDU days were like:

This is me live-braiding art-drummer Frankie Frankie as she works out a rhythm!

The show has also been on the road. I've braided heads at the Third Coast International Audio Festival, Hot Docs Festival, Megapolis Audio Festival, and I was artist in residence at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum.

Some high Braidio praise from Britt Wray of CBC Radio 3 -

“What’s clear is that Braidio is the type of creativity for the sake of it that we need more of, in broadcasting and in music both. It regenerates, it entertains, it takes chances, it loves and it can laugh at itself. ”
