Unsound

If you’re a hearing person you probably know Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of the telephone. But for many Deaf people he is known for his oppressive oralist approach to education. Not all deaf people can learn to speak. Or believe they should. And the harm of Bell’s oralism still reverberates today.

This documentary aired on CBC Ideas, we also provided a full ASL version.

Can I Go Ahead Now Jane?

As a palliative care doctor, Joshua Wales had seen a lot of death. But he had never intentionally shortened someone's life. That all changed in the summer of 2016. Just a couple of months after it was legalized in Canada, Joshua had his first experience of medically assisted dying, with a patient named Jane.

Bread: The rise and fall

Bread is life. But for some, it represents a wrong turn in our species' evolution. Through conversation with bakers, religious leaders, historians and bread aficionados, I asked whether bread has led us to salvation or damnation.

This documentary was my first for CBC Ideas. Nicola Luksic was my editor. And I worked with my collaborative cousin Johnny Spence on the sound design.

dr.Clock

What time is it? For Dr.Clock this question is his life. He is in the business of time - fixing, testing, buying and selling clocks and watches. His whole life revolves around helping people figure out what time it is. But he is the first person to tell you that time doesn’t exist.

This documentary originally aired on ABC Soundproof. It was a finalist for the Prix Italia. My editor was Julie Shapiro and I worked with my collaborative cousin Johnny Spence on the sound design.

amaZING grace

One day, I was walking down Grace Street in Toronto, eating a slice of pizza, when I stumbled upon a plaque. It was dedicated to Grace Bagnato. A woman who had taught herself Yiddish, Polish and Ukrainian so that she could help her neighbours navigate their new country. But that’s really just a taste of this woman’s incredible legacy and the journey it took me on.

This documentary originally aired on the CBC Doc Project. You can see photos of Grace and her family here.

My dad’s rock

When I think of my father at his happiest I picture him covered in dirt, holding a pick axe and digging. My dad loves to dig. And I've been trying to unearth a bit of understanding on why he spent the last 25 years uncovering a massive useless rock formation. I've been talking to all my family members too, asking them the same question: What did you think he was doing out there?
